Vickie's Gut Instincts Earn Her a Place in Small Business Success
In Small Business Success, a magazine published for the Small Business Administration, writer Karen M. Kroll interviewed Vickie Milazzo about how entrepreneurs can succeed, as Vickie did, by trusting their instincts.
The October 2005 article, "Going with Your Gut," opened with a brief synopsis of Vickie's success story. In 1982, she started her legal nurse consulting business because her instincts told her that attorneys trying medical-related cases needed the consulting services of RNs. "I defied conventional wisdom that said if something hadn't been done before, it's not worth doing," Vickie told Kroll. "I knew I could save attorneys a lot of time and money." Nurses know more about the medical record than any healthcare provider and are more cost-effective than MDs.
"Some [entrepreneurs], like Milazzo, listen to their instincts and successfully exploit opportunities others don't even notice," Kroll wrote. Vickie's 23 years of success – and the 20,000-plus RNs who have taken her programs – are a testimony to the accuracy of Vickie's instincts.

When Dayna asked Vickie how she created her successful consulting and training business, making good money with a flexible schedule, Vickie responded, "I managed it with great discipline and by staying focused on the big things." Vickie told her radio audience Promise 1, I will live a passionate life, is "about waking up every day to not just a life that we love but a career that we love. So often people are focused on TGIF – 'Thank God It's Friday.' Whether I'm at work or whether I'm out playing, I say, 'Thank God It's Today.' "
Vickie's second promise, I will go for it or reject it outright, is about not waiting for all conditions in your life to be perfect before you embark on a new career or a life change. She commented, "It's perfectly okay to say, 'This is not right for me,' and reject it outright. The key is to not hold back when we know something is right for us. We have to go for it."
The third promise, I will take one action step a day toward my passionate vision, is about taking real action to back up your passion and vision for your goals. "Success is in the motion...that's where it happens," said Vickie.
When Dayna asked about the fourth promise, I commit to being a success student for life, Vickie explained, "Entrepreneurship requires enormous agility and enterprising skills. The only way you can continue to be agile and enterprising is to learn and grow. There are so many wonderful mentors out there to learn from...writers, speakers, other entrepreneurs. We should be learning from as many people as we can."
Vickie cited the fifth promise as her favorite. I believe I really can do anything is "all about believing that you can do what you see. Each one of us has a success that we can look to. For me, it was working with patients in the hospital and making split-second decisions that saved lives. When I saw that I could do that, I knew I could do anything and that has definitely helped me. We all have to work on that promise every day."
In closing, Dayna asked, "When you've spent years and years doing one kind of job, what's the first step you should take to accomplish your goal of becoming an entrepreneur?" Vickie offered this advice to aspiring entrepreneurs: "The very first step is to sit back and listen to whether there's a passion that can go with the expertise you've learned.... Then you have to envision that passion into an entrepreneurial job and do the necessary research and study to turn it into a reality. Don't let fear get in the way of something big."

Denver Business Journal Interviews Vickie About Career Opportunities
for Nurses
In an August 2005 article about nurse entrepreneurs, the Denver Business Journal featured legal nurse consulting as a career alternative for nurses desiring to get out of hospital nursing, but wanting to continue to use their nursing expertise. According to the article, “Nurses Find Attractive Legal Alternative,” nurses are leaving hospitals and for careers in the legal arena because they’re "frustrated by low wages, long hours and understaffed departments."
Vickie L. Milazzo, RN, MSN, JD, the pioneer of legal nurse consulting, is quoted on why she created the legal nurse consulting profession, "I felt…like I was in Nepal climbing the Himalayas without oxygen. That little spark was missing…I merely wanted to practice nursing on my own terms.”
The article states that legal nurse consultants in the Denver area report earnings as high as $150 per hour, compared to the $25 per hour nurses earn on average, according to the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment.
Meg Dunlop, who completed the legal nurse consulting certification program through Vickie Milazzo Institute, left her position as an intensive care and cardiology RN and has worked as a legal nurse consultant for five years. “I have much more flexibility now. They are not the long, 12-hour shifts that require me to be away so much,” Dunlop said.
According to the American Bar Association Market Research Department, there are 1,104,766 practicing attorneys in the U.S. – plenty to keep thousands of CLNC®s busy full time.
Texas Bar Journal Features Stevie Award Winner Vickie Milazzo
Institute founder Vickie L. Milazzo, RN, MSN, JD was featured in the December 2004 Texas Bar Journal, the best-read legal publication in Texas. The article, "Improving the Health of Law Practices," educated the magazine's 89,000 subscribers about the CLNC® profession and Vickie's Mentor of the Year Stevie Award (see article on this business "Oscar®" in Legal Nurse Consulting Ezine, Vol. 16, No. 1, January 7, 2005 in the NACLNC® Community section at www.LegalNurse.com).
The bar journal reported how CLNC®s improve the health of law firms. "A CLNC® can review and interpret relevant medical records, research standards of care, prepare chronologies, screen medical-related cases, and assist with discovery."
According to the Texas Bar Journal, 92.4% of Texas lawyers read every issue. We are sure many of them would agree with this comment from Vickie's interview: "Few attorneys know how to read medical records or understand the terminology and subtleties of healthcare issues to achieve the best results for their clients. With its cover story on Vickie L. Milazzo, RN, MSN, JD and legal nurse consulting, a brand new publication for working women hit the stands in Houston. The front cover of the premiere issue of Houston Woman Magazine showed a photograph of Vickie and highlighted its accompanying article with the lead title, "Vickie Milazzo Pioneers New Field for RNs."Vickie is quoted, "Any nurse who has a CLNC® Certification, a strong nursing background and the courage to hang in there can make it as a legal nurse consultant. I tell my clients to believe what I know to be true: 'We are nurses, and we can do anything!' "

A recent article, "Consultants Bridge Medical-Legal Gap," appeared in The Modesto Bee. This California daily newspaper interviewed Vickie and three successful CLNC®s for a story on this "attractive career change" for nurses. CLNC®s talked with the reporter about how "The investigative aspect of legal nurse consulting appeals to many nurses." Each nurse briefly described why she became a CLNC®.Readers learned that, "By helping the legal system understand complex language and protocol of the medical universe, nurse consultants can help deter abuse and fraud, and hold negligent doctors or nurses accountable."

The Sacramento Business Journal featured Vickie and two successful CLNC®s in the article "Nurses Enjoy New Vistas with Consulting Side Jobs."Vickie L. Milazzo points out that, "Part of what's attractive about legal nurse consulting is we have more than a million attorneys in the United States and they deal with everything from medical malpractice to personal injury cases."
Another attraction is the pay. Legal nurse consultants can earn much more than they earn from nursing, and they can do the work part time. Vickie also reminds us that, "The average age of an RN is mid-40s, so it's just natural that nurses at some stage would look for other ways to use their experience and expertise." She herself only had 6 years of nursing experience before becoming a successful legal nurse consultant.

Terra Wellington of Balanced Living™ Seeks Vickie's Educational Expertise
Terra Wellington is a consumer wellness expert and she interviewed Vickie L. Milazzo, RN, MSN, JD for the article "Education Brings Lasting Joy" in her column, Balanced Living.The article quotes Vickie as saying,"The people who are the happiest are the ones who are always growing. The only way you can grow is to learn." Reports Vickie, "…no matter your income level or age, there are always possibilities of learning."
As students of the Institute already know, Vickie is passionate about education. That passion began early. Her favorite game growing up in New Orleans was teaching her imaginary class. And now she teaches thousands of nurses every year.

Pittsburgh Business Times Interviews Vickie About Nurse Entrepreneurs
In a January 2003 article about nurse entrepreneurs, the Pittsburgh Business Times discussed various career routes nurses take to get out of the hospital and use their nursing expertise in a different way. According to the article, this migration from the bedside to entrepreneurship is happening because nurses are "so disenchanted with the hospital setting that they're opting to start their own businesses."Vickie L. Milazzo, RN, MSN, JD, "the nurse who is credited for pioneering the legal nurse consulting profession," is quoted as saying, "Working conditions in the hospital are a lot worse than they were 10 years ago.... The workload on nurses these days is a lot more than it used to be."
One of Vickie's students, Leigh Ann Chermak, RN, CLNC, is also featured in the article. "Part of the reason I'm doing this is to be at home," says Leigh Ann, who is expecting her first child. "You have to market yourself and get your name out there.... The overhead is minimal with only a computer, fax and business stationery needed to get started."

In 1984 Vickie hired her husband Tom as her first employee.The story features women entrepreneurs who have hired their spouses as employees. Vickie and Tom share some of the many benefits of working together, such as the 10 weeks of vacation they take each year, a fitting reward for the long hours they spend keeping the business on track. Lawyers Weekly USA Educates Lawyers about Legal Nurse Consulting
When Lawyers Weekly USA called wanting to interview me because I pioneered legal nurse consulting, I was thrilled. This major national newspaper is one of my favorite publications. Attorneys pay up to $289/year to subscribe (28% of subscribers are millionaires). According to the Lawyers Weekly USA website, their subscribers referred 223,000 cases in the last 12 months. So you can see why I took the time to talk to their reporter, even though I was rushing off to the airport for a dream vacation in Africa.Since approximately half of Lawyers Weekly USA subscribers handle medical-related cases, I knew the readership for the article, "Finding the Right Nurse for Your Firm," would be high. The story informed attorneys that legal nurse consultants can work on a variety of cases, such as workers' comp, products liability and criminal as well as medical malpractice. P.S. Following the publication of this article, I sent a letter to the editor. It was published in the October 28 issue of Lawyers Weekly USA. In it I stressed, "Having worked with attorneys and legal nurse consultants for 20 years, I know that an attorney who represents a client (plaintiff or defense) on a medical-related case without the expertise of a Certified Legal Nurse ConsultantCM is at risk for being sued for legal malpractice." This is the real message the legal community and every consumer need to understand. Please help spread this vital message to everyone you know.
Houston Chronicle Features Vickie and the LNC Profession
After interviewing Vickie L. Milazzo, RN, MSN, JD, the Houston Chronicle (Houston's major daily newspaper) published an article on Vickie and the profession of legal nurse consulting in the Sunday, January 27, 2002 edition.In the article, "Nurse Consultants Tackle Medical-Legal Issues," Chronicle correspondent Alice Adams reported that, "Legal nurse consultants who have earned an RN will charge anywhere from $75 to $150, depending on the consultant and their experience. Compared to what physicians usually charge – often $400 an hour – nurse consultants have become a cost-effective solution to getting cases analyzed prior to trial."
The article also pointed out that "of the approximately 900,000 attorneys in practice today, 25 percent deal with medical malpractice and personal injury cases. Sheer numbers indicate the growing need for specialized legal nurse consultants."
Vickie is quoted as saying, "Attorneys are seeking nursing experience. Attorneys know the law and they understand the legal implications of a case. What they need is an interpreter to help them understand the medical aspects of the trial."
The piece featured a photo of two of Vickie's students, Copia Westbrook, RN, and Jennifer Fougerousse, RN, CLNC, consulting on a complicated medical case. In addition to outlining the typical steps in an LNC's involvement in a medical malpractice case, the article gave an overview of the Institute's training programs.
Vickie Featured in Employment Review
In an article titled "Medical Entrepreneurs Provide Dose of Innovation," Employment Review, November 2001, Vickie speaks out about how nurses are looking for entrepreneurial career options. The article includes Vickie's comments on a survey of her students which established some of the key reasons nurses seek entrepreneurship:- "To make a difference in people's lives"

- "To be in charge of your future"

Attorneys who read the Houston Business Journal know more about the legal nurse consulting profession. This popular business weekly interviewed Vickie L. Milazzo, RN, MSN, JD, for their quarterly special focus on healthcare, citing her as the pioneer of this field.
In the article, Denise Heath-Graham, RN, CLNC, praised the LNC training she received through the Vickie Milazzo Institute: "The training positioned me for success and provided the encouragement and support I needed to actually get out there and do it."
