I recently mentored a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant, Mary, who had been working as a subcontractor for another CLNC® consultant, Joan. Mary was subcontracting for Joan on a large volume of cases for one of Joan’s attorney-clients. When that attorney suddenly decided to retire, Mary was just as suddenly out of a subcontracting job and in a panic about what to do.
I recently met an RN who wanted to subcontract with me as a legal nurse consultant. Like I do with all subs, I put her to the test and gave her a very specific assignment due in one week. I’m assessing whether this legal nurse consultant has what it takes to follow through and to follow the simplest of requests. Will she be there when needed, whether it’s a weekday or a weekend? Does this person come through under pressure or not (not that I define a week as a high pressure deadline)? Are they more yack than sack?
There I was nearly nine years ago, suffering from what I now refer to as “professional bradycardia.” I signed up for LegalNurse.com’s CLNC Certification Seminar and had my breath taken away! That 6-day seminar in 2000 was about to change my life forever and ever. However, at the time I only knew it was The Best program I had ever attended as a nurse, bar none!

While each CLNC consultant’s story is different, the overwhelming message from all is that it’s okay to feel the fear but success only comes by fully embracing it. I personally love what Eleanor Roosevelt said, “Do the thing you cannot. You must.”

For the first time in my memory nurses are getting laid off in significant numbers. The deteriorating health of our economy is affecting almost every U.S. job – this includes nursing. But as I am hearing from the registered nurses I’ve trained, a career as a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant is a recession-proof choice.
