Thoughts for Success: Living a Life of Significance

I aspire to live a life of significance and this quote reminds me that living that life requires intention.

How significant is it to get the highest score in Candy Crush® or be the fastest responder in Words With Friends®? Time is a precious gift, not to be wasted. What will you do today to be significant?

Legal Nurse Consultant Success Story

CLNC® Success Story: A Day in the Life of CLNC Consultant Suzanne Arragg

The BEST part of being a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant is the ability to choose how I want to spend my day. Barring the fact that there are times when I do not have the liberty to control my schedule because of an arbitration, mediation or trial, my typical day always begins with two cups of Java while looking out onto my garden. Enjoying the quiet and tranquility of the morning keeps me centered and calm.

Once I have breakfast, I stroll into my home office and start checking email. Usually there are urgent requests from various attorney-clients on different medical-related cases, so I begin by prioritizing the order in which I need to respond. Then, I turn to the current project at hand. The project may be medical record review and analysis, reviewing a CLNC subcontractor’s latest report, reading deposition transcripts, reviewing medical bills, preparing a damages analysis and/or conducting research.

Soon it is time for lunch. Depending upon how busy the day is, I consume some healthy protein and then go for a 3-mile run. I clean up, grab a healthy snack and return to my home office to check email and resume the project at hand.

Tom’s Tech Tips

Tom’s Tech Tip: Update Your Browsers – NOW

I know many Certified Legal Nurse Consultants with old computers, maybe not with monochrome screens but close. I also know many CLNC® consultants with brand spanking new, or nearly new, Macs, Windows 8 and Windows 7 machines. If you’re still running Windows XP, it’s really time to move. If you’re running Internet Explorer on a Windows XP machine take heed of this notice from CERT, a division of the Department of Homeland Security. Running IE and XP creates a security risk for your computer and Cert recommends you move to a different browser. I recommend Firefox or Chrome and I recommend you move quickly.

No matter the age of your computer, my CLNC amigos need to keep your web browsers up to date. Some are easier to do than others – Google’s® Chrome® browser updates itself. Firefox® can be set to do the same. Even Internet Explorer® 11 can be set to automatically update either by itself or as part of Windows updates (which you should do anyway). Safari® seems to update itself,

Genocide Survivor Reminds CLNC® Consultants How Bright the Future Can Be

I was in Kigali, Rwanda talking to a young woman, Darlene, who’d lost her aunts and uncles to the 1994 genocide. As you probably recall, in 100 days more than 1,000,000 Rwandans classified as Tutsi were machine-gunned, hacked and clubbed to death by Rwandan Hutus. Neighbors murdered neighbors. Coworkers killed coworkers. Anyone labeled Tutsi by their identity card was marked for death and many were killed. Visiting the Genocide Memorial is a sobering experience. Photos of the missing victims, children, parents, siblings are hung in a room – taken from the walls of the refugee camps where survivors hoped that against the odds they’d find any other surviving family member.

Darlene attends the Akilah Institute for Women, whose mission is to help young Rwandan women become successful entrepreneurs and leaders in their country. She survived due to a stroke of luck – her parents sought refuge in Burundi during the genocide while the rest of her family had stayed behind in Rwanda to perish. When I asked her about her loss, she said “I cannot change the past, but I can change the future.” Profound and amazingly upbeat – I can’t say that I would feel the same way.

CLNC® Business Lessons I Learned Gorilla Trekking

Successful Certified Legal Nurse Consultants know the power of being focused completely on one thing – and one thing only. But it’s easy to forget what that even feels like with our kids, spouses, attorney-clients, legal nurse consulting cases, email and Facebook friends coming at us 24 hours a day.

Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda reminded me how the power of an empty mind heightens focus. Mountain gorillas are called that for a reason – they live in the mountains, not a zoo. So to see them you have to go where they go. And that meant trekking through a dense rainforest. No trails. Steep ups and downs over slick, muddy ground. It rains there almost every day and the ground reflects it.

We were blessed with a perfect day – but still the ground was slick from previous rains and it made for treacherous footing. I was totally focused on each and every step. My only concerns – the root I was about to trip over or the muddy patch that I might slip on and slide off the 40-ft drop off.

Vickie’s Favorite Quotes: Bill Bryson

I just got back from tracking gorillas in Rwanda – a country I never thought I’d visit and an experience I never thought I’d have. My twin brother, Vince jokes that he loves animals more than he loves people. After experiencing gorillas in the wild, I know why. LOL! When a gorilla looks at you the experience is spiritual. It’s like they are looking into your soul and affirming all the mysteries of life.

Tom's Tech Tips

Tom’s Tech Tip: Web-Surfing Tips for Certified Legal Nurse Consultants

Reading and researching for your legal nurse consulting work product on the web is absolutely necessary as a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant. But sometimes reading that important scholarly article on a website can be an annoyingly slow process because the site owner/publisher has broken a simple article into 5 or 6 page views.

3-19-14-Web-Surfing-Tips-for-Certified-Legal-Nurse-Consultants

If you’re like me and prefer to read without clicking, simply look for a “print” icon on the top or bottom of a page. If a CLNC® consultant were to click on that icon it usually puts the story into a single-page-view designed for printing. And guess what? That single-page-view is ideal for reading the entire article – usually without advertisements. It also looks great when you print it out for that legal nurse consulting work product.

Two more simple tips for my CLNC amigos are to ignore those “back to top” buttons that often float on the side of a webpage. If you need to go to the top of a page (after reading to the end) simply hit the “Home” button on your keyboard. If you want to jump to the bottom of a webpage hit the “End” button.

Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff – Love It!

At 5:50am this morning, I was waiting for Starbucks® to open before we started the Las Vegas CLNC® Certification Seminar. It’s hard to believe that in Vegas a Starbucks doesn’t open until 6:00am, but that’s why I was in line. Waiting. Patiently. For. My. Caffeine. Fix.

What Certified Legal Nurse Consultants Should Do Before Going to Bed

Okay, I know you’re thinking my advice is going to be to floss, brush your teeth, wash your face and moisturize, but men read this blog too and I know they’ll ignore at least three of the four recommendations. So today I’m off personal hygiene and onto a strategy that can alter your CLNC® productivity for life.

Let’s face it, no matter how energetic you are, you only get 24 hours in a day. Smart Certified Legal Nurse Consultants put your brain to work when you’re sleeping, not just while awake. As RNs, we know how important sleep is for the body’s physiological maintenance. Sleep can both recalibrate your tired brain and make new connections between important pieces of information already learned while awake. This, in turn, can help you find quicker and better solutions to problems.

Try this strategy: 30 minutes before you go to sleep, consider that one issue in your medical malpractice case or CLNC business that has you stumped. Then push it aside and use the 30 minutes to fully relax – meditate, soak in the tub or whatever relaxes you 🙂 for a full 30 minutes before you go to sleep.
