Some people believe we get the karma we deserve. That may be true, but sometimes we get the karma other people inflict on us. There are two things I like to do when I fly. The first is work on my laptop. The second is rock out to Mark Knopfler or Daft Punk on my iPod while I’m working. My karma must show on my face because when I fly, I seem to attract the two things I detest the most to interfere with what I love.
Call me crazy, but I’m never voluntarily retiring from legal nurse consulting. The only way this Elvis is leaving the building is if my Executive Team tasers me then sets me out on an ice flow. Luckily, between global warming and Houston’s fairly tropical climate, there aren’t many ice flows nearby, so my days of looking over my shoulder for polar bears won’t be happening anytime soon.
I detest whining and complaining, but I too am very capable of it and accomplished at it. Women often like to talk out our problems. But there’s a fine line between talking something out and simply whining and complaining about it. I’ve been known to ask an employee or two or four, “Hey, would you like me to get you some cheese to go with that whine?”
My mom died from breast cancer at age 48 leaving many of her plans and dreams unrealized and unfulfilled. Five months ago, a dear 84-year-old friend was given four months to live, but she decided she has a lot more living to do. Both my mom and my friend reinforce the understanding that time is more valuable than money and possessions.
On a trip to England my husband, Tom, and I visited Stratford-on-Avon, looking for the home of William Shakespeare. The historic center of town is small and easy to navigate. However, we couldn’t find anything that even resembled Shakespeare’s homestead. Resting against a wall, we opened our water bottles and looked once more at our map. At my insistence (since husbands don’t ask for directions), we stopped a passing pedestrian.
We all know the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Michelangelo said, “If people know how hard I had to work to gain my mastery, it wouldn’t seem so wonderful.” Surely he loved his work as much as the final masterpiece. How else could he be Michelangelo?

Yesterday, a nurse at the Houston CLNC® Certification Seminar asked me, “How does it feel to be a celebrity?” My response, “I’m a working CEO (who, for the record, gets up at 4am every morning). I don’t have time to bask in admiration. Plus, if my head ever starts to swell, my staff is quick to remind me there’s real work to do. There’s nothing like 20 employees to help me keep it real.”
I admit, when it comes to my appetite (for life that is), I’m a greedy person. I have high expectations for my life and career and I plan on having them as long as I have a life. Without expectations and desires, we don’t have a life at all. I’m big on acting on our dreams, not just dreaming them.
