Thoughts for Success: Surrounding Yourself with Think-a-Likes Shrinks Your World
We often think the way to grow our legal nurse consulting business is to surround ourselves with vendors, CLNC® subcontractors and attorneys who think the way we do, when in fact they shrink our world.
People who think differently, or who challenge your thinking, can make you uncomfortable. Let me ask you a question, when is the last time you voluntarily talked to someone who makes you uncomfortable because they think differently than you do? It’s easy to encapsulate yourself in a nice comfortable bubble filled with people just like you. The problem with that is they will endorse every bad decision you make, commiserate with every setback and support you no matter how wrong you are.
But to evolve and grow, both personally and professionally, you must get out of that protective bubble and seek other voices. Now if you tell me you’re hearing other voices I might back away, but what I mean is you have to be willing to listen to people with different opinions and different viewpoints. It doesn’t mean they’re right, but it does mean they might challenge you to approach a question or problem differently than you might normally do if left to your own devices.
Two Certified Legal Nurse Consultants, Dorene Goldstein, RNC, BSN, CLNC and Suzanne Arragg, RN, BSN, CDONA/LTC, CLNC couldn’t be more different. They don’t always agree on attorneys, cases, work product or even what a CLNC business should look like. But they do always share ideas and support and inspire each other. That kind of openness to someone who’s not a think-a-like is what takes you to places in your legal nurse consulting business that you might not otherwise travel to.
Surround yourself with business people, advisors and Certified Legal Nurse Consultants who think differently than you. Listen and learn from them. Who knows what new and expansive discoveries you’ll make!
