RN job salary compared to a legal nurse consultant salary

How Does Your RN Salary Stack Up Against a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant’s Fees?

One variable that contributes to the huge level of stress among RNs is the fact that RNs are working harder than ever with little to no reward. Indeed, whether or not you get a pay raise in your RN job is dependent upon the kindness and generosity of healthcare administrators – people well known for rarely looking out for RNs.

According to the Department of Commerce, RNs are losing ground in the salary department even as hospital revenues are reaching record highs. In contrast, a recent survey of Certified Legal Nurse Consultants reveals their fees to be much higher from the start (up to $150/hr) and CLNC consultant fees increase 3-5% annually.

At the same time, an advanced nursing education doesn’t help RNs much. Many RNs are responsible for obtaining advanced RN educational degrees at their own expense – often with little to no reward. As a personal case study, when I obtained my master’s degree in nursing I didn’t even get a nickel pay raise. Translation: “It doesn’t matter what I do to improve myself as an RN. A nurse is a nurse is a nurse – is a commodity. Period, end of statement.”

To attain a BSN or MSN can cost an RN $30,000-$60,000 with little reward beyond professional fulfillment. In contrast, a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant can start a business for an investment of less than $5,000. Once certified, a CLNC consultant can charge up to $150/hr plus gain the freedom and flexibility of owning her life.

There’s also the time commitment straining an already busy, stressed-out RN to attain that BSN or MSN degree. A registered nurse has to give up nearly two years for such a degree with ultimately no payoff whatsoever, whereas RNs can become certified through LegalNurse.com’s CLNC Certification Program in only 5 days (Live Seminar) or 40 hours (Online Video Program).

Unlike a university program, LegalNurse.com doesn’t waste your time or money with irrelevant content. We don’t teach you how to be a nurse – you already know how to do that. We teach you (a qualified RN) how to take your nursing experience and translate that into consulting with attorneys and insurance companies. That’s why LegalNurse.com can deliver the Core Curriculum for Legal Nurse Consulting® education and CLNC Certification to you in 5 days.

Where will you invest your money this year – adding to the alphabet soup behind your name or adding a meaningful credential (the CLNC Certification) that leads to your happiness and a healthy improvement in your bank account?

In this New Year it pays to assess how your RN salary stacks up. How’s yours looking today?

Success Is Yours!

  1. I know from experience that you are very right. There is not an extra nickel earned after getting those degrees; they only add to the credentials. The only thing was it helped my writing skills, (I was horrible) not any more than that. The writing skills are easily learned from the Institute – lots of great mentors!

  2. Thanks for these true statements. I have been an RN for 26 yrs and I work hard every shift with no reward but more complaints and issues from all staff, departments and administration. I attended the 5- Day CLNC® Certification Seminar in November 2015. It was eye-opening and the best experience I have encountered in long time. I am excited for this new challenge and I encourage all RNs to take action to work hard for yourself. It will pay off in ways we only dream about. I’m excited to report that by using one of the many strategies, I have met my first attorney. Thanks, Vickie, for sharing your experience with us every day.
