Tom’s Tech Tip: All Certified Legal Nurse Consultants Should Search Before They Call (Tech Support)

Something I’ve learned about computer problems is that I’m not the only one experiencing them. Yes, Mr. Thomas Tech-Tip has computer issues – probably more than most people. But something I’ve learned is that no matter what your problem may be, there is a high probability that someone else is experiencing it or has experienced it in the past.

That means that one of the fastest ways for any Certified Legal Nurse Consultant to solve an issue with her computer is to search for the problem online. You’ll quickly find questions and answers that will often help fix your issue. The best thing about this method is that the questions are usually written by lay people (“My computer screen is rolling”) – in other words by non-computer geeks and, although the answers are often written by computer geeks, they’re simplified enough for a lay person to understand and fix the problem (“Try checking your monitor’s cable connections and if that doesn’t work, update your drivers by visiting…”).

No matter the brand of computer (Apple®, Dell®, Lenovo®, etc.) you’re using in your legal nurse consulting business, or the issue you’re having, simply searching the problem online will often bring you to a solution. I guarantee that this will be a much faster solution than sitting on hold waiting for a remote tech support person to try and understand your issue, and then walk you through a bunch of unnecessary diagnostics listed on their tech support protocol.

Much like in nursing and medicine, many protocols are not best practices or quick cures. If I can explain the problem in plain English, a savvy tech support person should be able to understand it and diagnose it without working me through a list of protocols. When that fails, there’s always the Geek Squad at BestBuy® and the Genius Bar at the Apple store.

Keep on Techin’,

Tom

P.S. Comment and share how you fix computer problems.
