A Mardi Gras Lesson for All Certified Legal Nurse Consultants

Today is Mardi Gras in New Orleans, and as a tour guide at Mardi Gras World says, “There’s no parade in the world like a Mardi Gras parade.” I couldn’t agree more.

Growing up in that fun, crazy city taught me you don’t have to wait to be invited to a party. Parties can be anywhere or anytime you choose. You can have a party at your house, a party in your mind, or as my dad used to say, while chowing down on a good Muffaleta, a party in your mouth.

Successful Certified Legal Nurse Consultants know the importance of being their own party. Wherever you go, embrace energy and joy and take the party with you. I can already hear some of you thinking, “But Vickie, how can I think about partying when I have challenging things happening in my life plus I work hard for a living!”

How you choose to react to what’s happening to and around you is the judge of how much fun you have in life. For example, Certified Legal Nurse Consultants often lose their sense of humor when an attorney says “NO.” Having a sense of humor and lightening up in spite of things not going your way — that’s the challenge we all face and that’s your choice.

How can we have fun when things aren’t going our way? We can start by having a laugh at what isn’t the way we think it should be. Also, stop labeling things as bad. Labeling something as bad limits your ability to find and experience the fun. Mardi Gras highlights this lesson.

Mardi Gras is an outdoor party that usually takes place in February in some of the worst weather you can experience in New Orleans. Don’t get me wrong, the weather can be glorious, but most likely it will be cold and rainy. But in New Orleans nobody says, “Let’s move the parade inside.” And nobody says, “Oh it would be so much fun to drink, parade, toss the beads and have a blast, but oh no, it’s raining, never mind.”

During Mardi Gras it doesn’t work that way. You either show or you don’t. And when you do show, you show all the way. Even I have been known to deliver a pretty good cross-check while shouting, “Out of the way grandma, those are my beads. 😉 ”

In New Orleans we know we can’t change the weather, but we can change the way we feel about it. When life or an attorney sends you cold and rainy weather, simply party your way into a different state. That Mardi Gras lesson can help you in your legal nurse consulting business, just as it has helped me for 33 years. Happy Mardi Gras!

P.S. Comment and share whether you’ve attended Mardi Gras and what’s your favorite part.

  1. My mom had a print on her office wall at at UCLA.
It was a crowded harbor of sailboats. She told me she loves it because as a Counselor at UCLA it reminded her how to live and encourage others – “You do not control the weather yet you can adjust your sail.”
