How Certified Legal Nurse Consultants Can Get Three Times as Much Done in a Day

When we were little we were taught that good students sit in their chairs and don’t move. Those of us who were the most still, got the most gold stars. And those of us who weren’t still – well let’s just say we didn’t get the best marks in conduct.

In 2014 we know, that contrary to those experts, we learn best when we’re on the move. Learning experts have proven that we remember best what we learn at the beginning and at the end of a study session. Therefore it pays to have shorter, more frequent study sessions.

The strategy of being on the move can work for your legal nurse consulting productivity too. How often do you find yourself staring at your computer screen waiting for the insights and words to come? Knowing the attorney’s deadline is looming, you’re hoping the report will write itself if you sit staring at the computer screen long enough.

When you hit the roadblock head-on, that might just be the right time to get up and take a 5-minute walk, stretch or have a cup of healthy green tea. You’ll most likely find the words you’re seeking in those moments of movement.

Certified Legal Nurse Consultant Suzanne Arragg, RN, BSN, CDONA/LTC, CLNC shares: “I take a brief walk away from a project when I start seeing double. For years I would sit for hours at a time at my computer pouring over medical records. Sometimes I thought my hips and legs were permanently flexed at 90 degrees! My nursing productivity has increased ten-fold! Why didn’t I think of this before?”

To ensure your brief break supports your legal nurse consulting productivity, do only those things that support the purpose of your CLNC® business. Avoid activities that distract or detract, such as email, Facebook® or Candy Crush®.

My worst grade in kindergarten was conduct. I was obviously too fidgety for my teacher. Little did she know she had a 5-year-old learning expert in her class. LOL.

I didn’t get the gold stars for conduct from that kindergarten teacher, but I did get them, decades later from trial attorneys for the reports I wrote on their medical malpractice cases. And those are the gold stars that mean the most to me.

Go ahead and take a break to improve your legal nurse consulting productivity. Your report, the attorney-client and possibly the outcome of the case depend on it.

I’m Just Sayin’

P.S. Comment and share what you do to get three times more done in a day for your CLNC business.

  1. 1. Go for a walk.
    2. Knit for a few minutes. (Just as long as I don’t do this for TOO long, lol.)
    3. Go and play with my kitties.

  2. I never could get those gold stars for sitting still. This is very good advice Vickie, to physically change positions and get the blood pumping in body parts that go numb, especially the brain.

I was on my second case that had a 36″ stack of medical records which I started on as soon as I got home at 5:00pm. I lost track of time and before I realized, it was 5:00am in the morning! I rested and got on the report that evening and again it was 5:00am in the morning on the second day. I was so excited to get the second case, I lost reasoning.
The lesson I learned from this experience: while editing all the mistakes I made in report writing, I was exhausted and I had to learn to pace myself and keep the CLNC® business fun. I had two weeks for the deadline which was plenty of time to get it done. I vowed to myself to manage time, meet the deadlines, and take some breaks.
